Joining Multiple Tables

Many of the databases from which you retrieve data will be relational databases. To retrieve all the information you need from the different tables that make up a relational database, you not only need to place multiple tables on the table pane, you also need to join together the tables through their linking fields. Tables on the table pane are connected by join lines that indicate the linking fields and how they join the tables. Figure 40.15 shows a table pane with one join line connecting two tables. In the figure, the CUSTMR_ID fields are joined because the Customer ID number is the linking field for these tables. Table customer contains the company name and contact information for the customers who have orders in the orders table; in order to match customer data such as name, address, and contact person with the orders in orders, the two tables must be joined by their linking fields.
