Part IV: Optimizing Excel > Creating Automatic Subtotals

Chapter 23. Creating Automatic Subtotals

  • Simple subtotals

The Data, Subtotals command enables you to group data and display subtotals and grand totals for groups, and perform various calculations on the grouped data.

  • Complex subtotals

Create subtotals for groups within groups and perform multiple calculations on the columns in a group.

  • Conditional subtotals

Create subtotals for items in a list that satisfy simple or complex conditions that you set.

  • Changing the detail level in a report

You can use the outline level buttons to display different levels of subtotals.

  • Format and print the report

Use Excel's AutoFormat capabilities to quickly format and print a subtotal report.

Excel 97 provides an easy way to automatically create subtotals and grand totals. This feature is useful if you need to group data into separate groups—for example, group sales by account or group projects by team leader.
