What is a List?

The first example of a business list that most people encounter is the familiar rolling card file (see Figure 34.1). You can flip through a card file quickly to find information such as a client's address, phone number, or favorite restaurant. Card files are easy to use, provided that the cards are kept in alphabetical order according to a single key word, such as the client's name. Card files can present problems, however, when you want to do more than just find a client by name. If you wanted to find all the financial analysts in San Francisco, for example, using a card file could take considerable time.
