Chapter 15. Creating Charts > Reviewing the Charting Process

Reviewing the Charting Process

Excel creates charts from data you select. You can use the Chart Wizard to guide you through the process of creating a chart step-by-step. In many cases, you can have Excel draw a chart for you from the selected data. To draw the chart, the application uses certain rules based on how the data is configured. The data orientation determines which cells are used for the category axis, the labels along the bottom or x-axis, and which cells are used for the legend labels. In most cases, the rules fit standard data layout, so Excel charts come out correctly without intervention from you. You can customize the chart by using the many chart commands.
