What Are Automatic Subtotals?

Subtotals are a quick and easy way to summarize data in a list. Suppose you have a list of sales. The list includes the date, account, product, unit, price, and revenue. If you want to see subtotals by account, you can do so. You can also see subtotals by product.

With Excel's Subtotals command, you don't have to create the formulas. Excel creates the formula, inserts the subtotal and grand total rows, and outlines the data automatically. The resulting data are easy to format, chart, and print.
