Chapter 18. Building Complex Charts > Automatically Analyzing Trends with Chart...

Automatically Analyzing Trends with Charts

With Excel, there are three ways you can analyze trends and make forecasts: using the fill handles, using worksheet commands, and adding trendlines to a chart. You can add a trendline to a chart, using the Chart, Add Trendline command. The trendline will show you the direction of the plotted data and can also be used to make predictions. Regression analysis is used to create the trendline from the chart data, and you can select from among five types of regression lines or calculate a line that displays moving averages. Moving averages smooth out fluctuations in a data series by basing a given data point on the trendline on the average of a specified number of prior data points.
