Part V: Analyzing the Worksheet > Manipulating and Analyzing Data

Chapter 25. Manipulating and Analyzing Data

  • Manipulating text

Excel uses a variety of ways to perform text, number, and date manipulation.

  • Using formulas to make decisions

The Excel IF() function is a powerful tool for making decisions based on test conditions.

  • Checking data entry

The concept of data entry is to provide a mechanism to avoid accidental errors by using formulas to test user input.

  • Using formulas to look up and analyze data in tables

Excel also provides a variety of database functions to analyze data in lists.

  • Analyzing trends

Using tools such as Edit, Fill, Series, Excel determines the linear progression, and therefore, trends, for you.

If all Excel did was perform algebraic computations in worksheets, it would still be a powerful tool, but certain tasks need more than number-crunching. If you use Excel extensively, you will undoubtedly find situations where the result depends on different conditions. Some of these conditions may depend on specific values or a range of values in a given cell. In other situations, you may want Excel to look up an answer from a list. You may also need to summarize data in a list based on certain criteria. Excel provides a number of features to facilitate this kind of processing and analysis.
