Key Points

  • OneNote data is stored in files called sections, which have the .one extension.

  • The Folder button takes the name of the folder that is currently open.

  • OneNote has many ways to navigate from place to place, including The Folder drop-down menu, section and folder tabs, the Back and Forward buttons, and the Navigate to Parent Folder button.

  • When you open a new folder, new section and folder tabs appear. The only section and folder tabs that appear are those that are open in the folder in which you are working.

  • To open a section or folder, open the File menu, click Open, click File or Folder on the submenu, and locate the section or folder you want to open in the dialog box. You can also open a section by clicking its name on the recently used file list at the bottom of the File menu.

  • To close a section, right-click its tab and click Close, or click Close on the File menu.

  • By default, your OneNote data is stored at C:\Documents and Settings\ Your Name\My Documents\My Notebook, but you can store data anywhere you like on your computer. By changing settings in the Options dialog box, you can designate a different folder as the default storage folder for OneNote data.
