Working with Handwritten Notes and Drawing Notes

Handwritten notes and drawing notes are created in the same way—with the tools on the Pen drop-down menu. However, drawing notes appear on the drawing canvas and can be resized. Handwritten notes, like their typewritten counterparts, appear in note containers. They can be merged in the same way that typewritten note text is merged. If OneNote mistakes a drawing for a handwritten note or vice-versa, you can fix the problem.

In this exercise, you handwrite a note and then change a drawing to a handwritten note or a handwritten note to a drawing.

1.
Click the Pen button, or to choose a different color and pen style than the one shown on the Pen button, click the Pen down arrow, and click the style you prefer.

Thick pens are preferable to thin ones for writing notes because thin lines are difficult to read. You can find the Pen button on the Drawing and Writing Tools toolbar as well as the Standard toolbar.

Tip

Displaying rule lines makes it easier to keep your note text straight and aligned. To make rule lines appear on the screen, click the Show/Hide Rule Lines button on the Standard toolbar.

2.
Drag the mouse pointer to create the letters.

As you drag, OneNote creates a drawing canvas because it thinks you are drawing rather than writing. You will fix that in the next two steps.

3.
Click the Type/Selection Tool button, and drag across the drawing canvas.

Dotted lines and selection handles appear, indicating that a drawing canvas has been selected.

4.
On the Tools menu, click Treat Selected Ink As, and then click Handwriting on the submenu.

To move a drawing canvas on a page, select it. Position the pointer over the drawing canvas, and when the pointer changes to a four-headed arrow, drag the canvas to its new location.

5.
Select another note.

To select a note, click its selection bar. To select a drawing note, click the Type/Selection Tool button, and drag across the drawing.

6.
On the Tools menu, click Treat Selected Ink As.

7.
On the submenu, click Handwriting to convert a drawing note to a note, or Drawing to convert a handwritten note to a drawing.

When you change notes this way, you also change a note container to a drawing canvas or a drawing canvas to a note container.
