Help in Many Colors

The Help system in Office XP was designed specifically to meet the needs of very different kinds of users needing very different kinds of help. Some users want to be walked through a process, getting guidance each step of the way. Other users want to see a quick write-up and then—Aha!—the lightbulb goes on. Still other users just need a little reminder now and then, telling them the name of this tool, the function of that button, and so on. Table 3-1 lists the different ways you can get help in Office XP and gives you a brief description of each method.

Whether you like to have a help companion at your side, want to do the research and then tackle the task, or just want a little nudge when you need it, you’ll find that at least one method of getting help in Office fits the way you work. This chapter introduces you to these various help channels so you’ll know how to find it when you need it.
