Instant Messaging

Depending on how you look at it, instant messaging is either a great time-saver and loads of fun or a real pain in the neck. Instant messaging is a relatively new phenomenon, a combination of e-mail and chat, which allows you to know which of your friends or coworkers are online with you and gives you the ability to trade quick little messages with them in real time.

To start instant messaging in Outlook, choose Instant Messaging from the Tools menu; then choose Log On from the submenu that appears. The .NET Messenger Service dialog box appears so that you can enter your e-mail address and password (as shown in Figure 14-6). If you don’t have a .NET account, click the Get A .NET Passport link at the bottom of the window and you are taken online to a Web page where you can sign up.
