Analyzing Data with Descriptive Statistics

Experienced business people can tell a lot about numbers just by looking at them to see if they “look right”—that is, the sales figures are about where they’re supposed to be for a particular hour, day, or month; the average seems about right; and sales have increased from year to year. When you need more than an off-the-cuff assessment, though, you can use the tools in the Analysis ToolPak, another Excel Add-In.

If you performed a complete installation when you installed Excel on your system, you will see the Data Analysis item on the Tools menu. If not, you will need to install the Analysis ToolPak. To do so, on the Tools menu, click Add-Ins to display the Add-Ins dialog box. Select the Analysis ToolPak check box, and click OK to install the Analysis ToolPak.
