Aligning Data in Cells

The Alignment tab in the Format Cells dialog box, as shown in Figure 8-17, positions text and numbers in cells. It also contains options you can use to create multiline text labels, repeat a series of characters within one or more cells, and orient text vertically or at any angle in cells. The Alignment tab includes the following options:

  • Horizontal These options control the right or left alignment within the cell. The General option, the default for Horizontal alignment, right aligns numeric values and left aligns text values.

  • Vertical These options control the top-to-bottom position of cell contents within cells.

  • Orientation These controls align text at virtually any angle within a cell.

  • Text Control These three options wrap text in cells, reduce cell contents until they fit in the current cell width, and merge cells into one.

  • Text Direction The options on this list format individual cells for right-to-left languages. This feature is used only if support is available for right-to-left languages using Microsoft Office Language Settings, which can be found by clicking the Windows Start button, clicking All Programs, and selecting the Microsoft Office Tools folder.
