Chapter 21. Linking and Embedding > Embedding and Linking from the Clipboard

Embedding and Linking from the Clipboard

When you copy data to the Clipboard, the source application typically posts the data to the Clipboard in a variety of formats. When you choose Paste Special in Excel (or in another application, if you're not pasting into Excel), the Paste Special dialog box allows you to choose among all the formats currently on the Clipboard that Excel (or the receiving application) can accept. Here is an example to illustrate the process.

The source data in this example is a Microsoft PowerPoint slide. By opening the View menu in the Windows XP ClipBook Viewer (clipbrd.exe), you can see the names of the formats in which PowerPoint has posted this data, as shown in Figure 21-2. The formats that aren't grayed out (Picture and Enhanced Metafile) are formats that the ClipBook Viewer application knows how to render. All the formats listed in gray below Enhanced Metafile are available for receiving applications, even though ClipBook Viewer itself can't render them.
