Chapter 19. Collaborating with Excel > Saving and Retrieving Files on Remote Co...

Saving and Retrieving Files on Remote Computers

Using the Save In drop-down list on the Save As dialog box, you can save a workbook on any available network drive, at an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) site or Web folder on the Internet, or at a SharePoint Team Services site. The dialog box that is displayed when you choose File, Open contains a Look In drop-down list similar to the Save In list. You can use this list to retrieve workbooks saved on the network or on the Internet.

When you try to open a file that resides on a network drive while another user has the file open, Excel displays the File In Use dialog box, which allows you to open the file in read-only mode. If the file was saved with password protection, you must also enter the appropriate password. Figure 19-1 shows the File In Use dialog box that appears when you attempt to open a file that's in use.
