Sorting Items

If you sort field items using the standard Sort command, Excel will sort all instances of your field items and preserve the sort order when you pivot the table. For example, to generate a descending sort of the Channel items as shown in Figure 30-15, you could select cell B6, choose Data, Sort, and specify a descending sort. Excel would then present the Channel items in the order Mail Order, International, Domestic in every place where those items occur.

You can also sort field items using an AutoSort feature. Like the standard Sort command, AutoSort rearranges table material across all instances and preserves the order you want even when you move fields from axis to axis. However, the AutoSort feature gives you the additional option of sorting field items on the basis of their data values. For example, using AutoSort, you can sort the Channel items in Figure 30-15 on the basis of the Sum Of Sales data or the Sum Of Units value. You could arrange the table so that, for each CatalogNo item, the channel with the highest sales totals appears first and the channel with the lowest sales totals appears last.
