When you outline a worksheet, Excel displays symbols above and to the left of the row and column headings (refer to Figure 9-30). These symbols take up screen space, so if you want to suppress them, you can click the Show Outline Symbols button if you created the custom Outlining toolbar. Alternatively, you can choose Tools, Options, click the View tab, and clear the Outline Symbols option. Click the button or select the option again to redisplay the outline symbols.

Remember, when you hide the outline symbols, the outline still exists; it's just hidden. To remove the outline completely, click Data, Group And Outline, Clear Outline.
