Chapter 1. Stealing Candy from a Baby Ho... > With Friends Like These…

With Friends Like These…

When people get their first exposure to the Web, email, and the Internet, they go through a technical learning curve and get an education on the nature of the Internet. Hoaxes and cons are everywhere, viruses and Trojan horses are sent daily, and spammers and hackers keep pounding away. Although you want your family and friends to join you in staying in touch via email, their learning curve can become annoying and sometimes lead to security issues.

Case Study 1-8

Michelle's best friend, Janet, just got a computer and was getting her first exposure to the Internet and email. As with many newcomers to email, Janet was excited by all the new information and hadn't yet learned about all the hoaxes passed around via email. Whenever Janet ran across information she found interesting, concerning, or funny, she sent it to a long list of her friends.

Michelle had been an email user for years and was cautious about giving out her email address. She wasn't that concerned with spam because she received just a few unwanted messages a week. Shortly after Janet started sending her emails, Michelle noticed an increase in the amount of spam she was receiving. The annoyance of the extra spam would be with her long after Janet's annoying emails had passed.
