You Get What You Ask For

Although most of us would never knowingly sign up to receive spam, many do that very thing every day. We'd like to believe that it's not our fault, but sometimes we take all the work away from spammers and other email attackers by signing up for their unwanted emails or allowing our email addresses to be sold to them. Although keeping your email address out of the hands of spammers can be difficult, you can certainly take some actions to avoid handing your information directly to them.

Case Study 1-1

Lisa clicked the Submit button to complete her purchase of a stainless steel butter dish when a pop-up window appeared that caught her attention. She was being offered a chance to win a free trip to the Bahamas. All she had to do was enter her email address, so the company could contact her when she won. Lisa looked out the window at the snow-covered ground, thinking some time on a warm beach sounded great, and entered her email address in the Web page. She really hoped she would win.

Lisa never received a winning email, but did see a significant increase in spam. Lisa forgot about the free trip within minutes, but the flood of spam was with her long after the snow outside had melted.
