Chapter 2. Neither Confirm nor Deny How ... > Do You Know What's in Your Email?

Do You Know What's in Your Email?

Voicemail has changed the way we deal with the phone. Instead of talking to someone directly on the phone, you can let the message roll to voicemail and listen to it when you want. This allows you to screen calls, ignore certain people, and check messages without anyone knowing when or from where you're listening to your messages.

You can think of email as the online equivalent of voicemail. However, the privacy that most people believe they have doesn't exist in email unless they take steps to protect it. Spammers can determine when and from where you read your email, what operating system and email program you use, and even where you're located geographically. This section describes how spammers can track email they send you and gather information about you in the process.
