MIME

MIME

The Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) protocol enables you to send information other than simple text. MIME isn't a brand-new format; instead, it works with headers in the text-based email protocol. Table A.2 lists the five headers specifically for MIME.

Table A.2. MIME Headers
HeaderDescription
MIME-VersionThis header declares a message to be MIME compliant and is required for a MIME message. This parameter is populated with a value of 1.0.
Content-typeDefines the type of data contained in the email. For example, for HTML mail, it's text/html.
Content-Transfer-EncodingMessages that contain special characters must be converted to pass through a text-based system such as email. This header defines the data's format for conversion purposes.
Content-IDA unique ID similar to a MESSAGE-ID header that can be used to identify MIME entities.
Content-DescriptionAn optional field for entering descriptive information about the data.
