SMTP

SMTP

POP3 and IMAP are used for receiving email, but Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) is used for sending email. Using a text-based communication mechanism similar to POP3, email messages are routed to the correct server and delivered to the intended recipient. A typical SMTP transaction looks something like this:

Email Server: 220 mail.myserver.com
Email User: HELO krypton.net
Email Server: 250 mail.myserver.com
Email User: MAIL FROM: superman@krypton.net
Email Server: 250 OK
Email User: RCPT TO: lex@luther.com
Email Server: 250 OK
Email User: DATA
Email Server: 354 End data with <CR><LF>.<CR><LF>
Email User: This is my test message.
Email User: .
Email Server: 250 OK
Email User: QUIT
Email Server: 221 Bye
