Hour 13. Working with Long Documents > Navigating with the Document Map

Navigating with the Document Map

Word comes with a feature called Document Map, which lets you view an outline of your document onscreen as you work and quickly navigate among headings. This feature only works properly if you have formatted your headings in one of these ways:

  • You have applied built-in heading styles.

  • You have applied your own heading styles that contain outline levels. This process is described in “Creating Styles for Your Headings” in Hour 9.

  • You have applied outline levels to the individual paragraphs that you want to use as headings in your document (using the Outline Level drop-down list in the Paragraph dialog box).
