Q1:When I applied an animation scheme to a master, the charts on those slides didn't animate. But when I looked at them in Custom Animation, they seemed to have an animation symbol. What's that about?
A1: Because animation schemes are limited, they might not immediately animate an element in a slide when they're attached to its master. But, as you noticed, they may show up in the Custom Animation order list.

Then it's up to you to leave them alone (no animation), or select an object in the slide, select the animation in Custom Animation, and click Copy to Slide. The animation that was set in the master will then be applied to the object, but only as a unit.

To tweak the animation further for a chart, diagram, or other object, you have to enter effect options in the specific effect in the order list.

Q2:If I copy and paste objects that I've animated, will the animations follow along?
A2: Try it. Copying and pasting is a great way to duplicate animated effects for multiple objects. Inserting a duplicate slide from one that already has animations in place is also a great shortcut and time saver.
Q3:What are the little colored boxes in the order list of the Custom Animation task pane?
A3: It's not any color code that is readily apparent. But if you hover your mouse over the square for a specific effect, you can see the duration of that effect (in seconds) as a tooltip.
