Changing the Text Font and Style

In the previous hour, we covered how to select portions of a bullet and quickly change some of the formats and the text color. We saw how the Formatting toolbar gave us selections for justification, color, bold, underline, and other text attributes.

To change all the bullet fonts, you drag through the bullet text (beginning between the first bullet icon and the first word of text) to select either the entire bullet block or a portion of it.

The quickest way to change just the font and its size is to use the drop-down arrow on the Formatting toolbar to change the font and the numerical drop-down list right beside it to adjust the size (see Figure 3.11).

Or, with the text selected, click Format, Font on the main menu to bring up the Font dialog box, as shown in Figure 3.12.

Figure 3.12. Using the Font dialog box gives you even more formatting options and enables you to choose from a wide array of styles and colors.

This puts all the font formatting options together for you, and by selecting Colors, More you can get a complete array of possible colors to apply to the selected text. You can also apply the following font effects from this dialog box:

  • Strikethrough

  • Double strikethrough

  • Superscript

  • Subscript

  • Shadow

  • Emboss

  • Engrave

  • Small caps

  • All caps

  • Hidden

A word of caution about selecting fonts for bullet text, title text, and text boxes: maintain consistency of style and color. Don't try to dazzle the audience.

The best way to maintain font consistency, both in terms of style and color coordination, is to use a design template. We'll cover design templates in Hour 5, “Applying Designs and Color Schemes.”
