Understanding Video Capture

Referring to graphics cards as video cards is an unfortunate marketing tactic that has resulted in a huge misunderstanding. Most graphics cards play back video, but only very few can acquire it or capture it. (Some also tune in TV signals, but only a few act as VCRs.)

To grab video into your computer and save it in a format that you can edit (AVI, MPG, MOV [QuickTime], or WMV [Windows media]), you need a special peripheral: a video capture device.
