Task 17 How to Add Borders and Shading to Text

You don't have to know anything about graphics to add attractive borders and shading to tables, headings, and paragraphs of text. You can even create a decorative border around the entire page. This task shows you how to work with the options available in the Borders and Shading dialog box, but you can also issue most of the commands with the Tables and Borders toolbar (click the Tables and Borders button on the Standard toolbar to display this toolbar).

  1. Choose Borders and Shading

Click anywhere within the paragraph or table cell to which you want to add borders and shading, or select adjacent paragraphs or table cells if you want to add borders and shading around the group of them. Choose Format, Borders and Shading to display the Borders and Shading dialog box.

  2. Apply a Border

Click the Borders tab if it isn't already in front. If you see an option under Setting that closely matches the type of border you want to add, click it.

  3. Select a Line Style

To customize the style of the lines in your border, scroll through the Style list and click the desired style. You can also use the Color and Width drop-down lists to change the color and width of the lines.

  4. Add Shading

To add shading, click the Shading tab; then click the color you want to use from the Fill palette. To add a pattern, click the Style drop-down arrow and select a pattern. When you have made all your selections in the Borders and Shading dialog box, click OK.

  5. View the Settings

The table or paragraph you chose in Step 1 reflects the new shading and border settings.

  6. Create a Page Border

To create a border around your page, open the Borders and Shading dialog box and click the Page Border tab. Specify the type of border you want, and choose OK. Word creates the border around every page in your document.
