Task 9 How to Insert Symbols

Need to insert a special character or symbol not found on the keyboard? Tap into Word's collection of characters and symbols to find exactly what you seek. Symbols include fractions (¾), trademarks (™), and other graphical elements; special characters include em dashes (—) and ellipses (…). You can insert a copyright ã or trademark ä symbol, for example, into your text for products you mention. Depending on what fonts you have installed, you might have access to additional symbols, such as mathematical or Greek symbols, architectural symbols, and more.

  1. Open the Symbol Dialog Box

    Click the insertion point where you want to insert the symbol and choose Insert, Symbol. the Symbol dialog box opens.



  2. Choose a Symbol

    On the Symbols tab, click a symbol. To change the symbols shown, click the Font drop-down arrow and choose another symbol font.



  3. Insert the Symbol

    After selecting the symbol you want to use, click the Insert button; the symbol is placed in your text. The Symbol dialog box remains open for your use.



  4. Choose a Special Character

    If you want to insert a special character in your text, such as an em dash or special quote mark, click the Special Character tab in the Symbol dialog box to view what's available.



  5. Insert the Special Character

    Select the special character you want to insert and click the Insert button. The selected character is added to your text.



  6. Close the Dialog Box

    The Symbol dialog box remains open in case you want to add another symbol. Click the Close button to exit the dialog box.
