Part 4. Using PowerPoint > Task 17 How to Add Animation Effects

Task 17 How to Add Animation Effects

You can apply PowerPoint's animation effects to slide objects. You can make a bulleted list appear on the slide, for example, and add one bulleted item at a time during the presentation. You can control exactly when each item appears, which prevents your audience from reading ahead of you during the presentation. You can also make each list item fly in from the side of the screen or fade in slowly. Many effects are possible, so be sure to test each one to see what it does. You can apply animation effects to any slide object.

  1. Activate Animation Schemes

From Slide Sorter view, select the slide object you want to animate. Then choose Slide Show, Animation Schemes.

  2. View the Effects

PowerPoint opens the Slide Design task pane and displays the Animation Schemes options.

  3. Choose an Effect

Scroll through the list of effects. To select an effect, click the effect name. PowerPoint automatically demonstrates the effect in the selected slide.

  4. Activate Custom Animations

You can create your own custom animations in PowerPoint. In Normal view, select the slide object you want to animate, and then choose Slide Show, Custom Animation.

  5. Assign an Animation Effect

PowerPoint opens the Custom Animation task pane. With the slide element selected, click the Add Effect button, select an effect category (such as Entrance), and click an effect type (such as Checkerboard).

  6. Modify the Effect

The task pane activates the various option settings you can adjust to control the effect. For example, to change the direction of the effect onscreen, click the Direction drop-down arrow and choose a direction. You also can adjust the speed and start mode for the effect.

  7. Do More Customization

After you assign an effect, it is listed in the Custom Animation task pane list box. Click the effect to view a drop-down list of additional customizing options, several of which (such as the Timing option) open additional dialog boxes with controls you can set.
