Part 3. Using Excel > Task 27 How to Move and Resize Charts

Task 27 How to Move and Resize Charts

If you created a chart as an embedded object on a worksheet (rather than on its own chart sheet), it probably won't be in the exact location you want it to be or the right size. For example, the chart might cover some of the existing data in the worksheet. You can move the chart out of the way and resize it to fit wherever you prefer. When you select a chart or any other graphic object, the object is surrounded by selection handles. You can use these handles to resize the object. When moving and resizing charts, you must click and hold the left mouse button and drag to move or resize. You learn how to accomplish both actions in this task.

  1. Select the Chart

Start by selecting the chart you want to move or resize. Be sure that you click a blank area of the chart, or you might end up selecting an individual chart element. As soon as you click on the chart to select it, the chart is surrounded by tiny black boxes, called selection handles.

  2. Move the Chart

To move the chart, hold down the left mouse button and drag the chart to a new location on the worksheet. As you drag, the outline of the chart is visible.

  3. Drop the Chart

When the chart is at the location you want, release the mouse button to drop it in its new location.

  4. Change the Width or Height

To resize a chart, drag the selection handles. To change either the width or height of the chart, drag one of the side handles. Drag outward to make the chart bigger; drag inward to make the chart smaller.

  5. Change the Width and Height

To resize two sides at once (that is, to change the width and height), click and drag a corner selection handle. As you drag, both sides of the chart are resized.

  6. Release the Mouse Button

As you drag to resize the chart, an outline of the chart appears to guide you in your resizing efforts. When the chart is the size you want, release the mouse button. Click outside the chart to deselect it.
