Task 5 How to Customize Toolbars

Every Office toolbar has a default set of buttons. However, you can customize any toolbar to show only the buttons you want. For example, you may want to add a few Web buttons to the Standard toolbar to tailor it to the way you work. This task will show you how to customize Office toolbars.

  1. Open the Customize Dialog Box

To customize a toolbar, open the View menu and select Toolbars, Customize. (Depending on which Office program you're using, the View menu might differ slightly from what is shown here.) The Customize dialog box opens.

  2. Set Toolbar Options

Click the Options tab to view several toolbar options. If you're working with Word or Excel, you can show the Standard and Formatting toolbars in full by clicking the Show Standard and Formatting toolbars on two rows check box. To switch to larger toolbar button icons, click the Large icons check box.

  3. Choose a Toolbar to Edit

To customize a toolbar, click the Toolbars tab and select the toolbar you want to customize. This displays the toolbar onscreen. For example, to customize the Drawing toolbar, click the Drawing check box.

  4. Choose a Command

Now click the Commands tab. To add a button to the toolbar, first select a command category from the Categories list. Then scroll through the Commands list box to find the icon you want to use.

  5. Add the Button to the Toolbar

In the Commands list, select the icon representing the button you want to add to the toolbar. Drag it from the list and drop it onto the toolbar where you want to insert it.

  6. Close the Dialog Box

When you've finished adding or deleting buttons from the toolbar, click Close to close the Customize dialog box.
