The Outlook Screen

The opening screen of Outlook can vary considerably depending on the current configuration. The default screen that shows after installing Outlook is the Outlook Today screen, shown in Figure 16.1. This Outlook Today view is defined by a folder inside Outlook called the Outlook Today folder and it shows an overview of messages, to-do tasks, and appointments for the current time period.

Figure 16.2 shows the Outlook Calendar folders that you see when you click the Calendar option at the left of Outlook's screen. The figure includes the Folder List, an optional pane that you can display or hide by selecting View, Folder List. The Folder List displays a list of all folders available to Outlook. As you use Outlook to organize your data, the amount of information you track with Outlook will grow considerably. To organize your data, you can create folders to store various messages and notes in. The problem with the Folder List is that it consumes screen space. However, most of the time, you can opt not to show it.
