Exercises

Your planning work is well underway and you'd like to look at different presentations of the project tasks. Maybe you're just tired of looking at a Gantt Chart. In the following exercises, you display your project in the Calendar format and in the Network Diagram view. In each view, you will make some changes to the display to see the effects. Begin by opening the file "New Product Hour 8.MPP." The exercise results will be found in the file "New Product Hour 8-Exercise.MPP." See the Introduction for instructions to access the sample files and solutions for these exercises on the book's Web page.

  1. Open the file and display the Calendar view.

  2. Add the Summary tasks to the Calendar display. Format the summary tasks as bars, with a background pattern in yellow.

  3. Reposition the Summary tasks to the show at top of each day.

  4. Investigate February 7, 2000, to find out which tasks should be displayed on that date but aren't, because there is not enough room in the date box.

  5. Filter the task list to display only critical tasks. Then reset the view to show all tasks again.

  6. Switch to the Network Diagram. View the diagram at a 50 percent zoom setting.

  7. Task 8, "Preliminary Investigation…," is a summary task. Locate it and hide its subtask details.

  8. Reset the diagram to 100 percent size and show all tasks.

  9. Use the Network Diagram toolbar to view only the task ID numbers and the linking relationship.
