Exercise

Your project includes key tasks that need to be monitored for slippage. In the exercise below, you set both a task constraint and a task deadline and then modify the task list to see the effects on the key tasks. Begin by opening the file, "New Product Hour 7.MPP." The solutions to the exercises can be found on the file, "New Product Hour 7-Exercise.MPP." See the Introduction for instructions to access the sample files and solutions for these exercises on the book's Web page.

  1. Which tasks currently have Constraint Dates set? Which tasks have had Deadlines set?

  2. If you don't finish identifying the new manufacturing process required for the product by the end of the month, you won't meet your decision date on time. Set a Finish No Later Than constraint of January 31, 2000, for Task 16, "Identify production process steps…." Force Project to set the constraint. Has anything changed on the Gantt Chart?

  3. It looks like it will take longer to identify the process steps than you thought. Change the Duration of Task 16 to 10 days. Allow a conflict to be created. Does the Gantt Chart look any different?

  4. You will want to be sure the t's are crossed and the i's dotted before proceeding. Put a deadline of 3/15/00 on Task 20, "Review legal issues."

  5. The risk analysis on this new product is more complex than originally thought. Change the duration for Task 22, "Develop risk analysis," to 15 days.

  6. Is the final milestone still on track to be completed by the deadline date of 5/1/00? How can you tell?
