Recording Deadlines

So far in this hour, you have been focusing on setting and managing date constraints for tasks that must meet an important start or finish date. But there have been a few words of caution:

  • Date constraints limit Project's ability to freely reschedule tasks as durations and predecessors change.

  • A disconnect can occur between a task with a constraint that must be met and any successor tasks that rely on updated information from the constrained task.

  • Constraint conflicts can be difficult to detect by just looking at the links on a Gantt chart.

  • Scheduling conflicts will bring you frequent visits from the Planning Wizard.

  • Date constraints take some control out of your hands as the project manager. It is, after all, your job to keep a close eye on the key tasks in your project and then develop strategies for dealing with delays and interruptions.
