Summary

During the planning phase, the time will come when your plan is as good as you can get it, or your customer signs off on the plan, or you simply run out of planning time. Preserve your hard work by capturing the baseline vales for task start, finish, duration, work, and cost. As the project gets underway, but before any changes have been made to the plan, agree on a method for collecting progress information, including the frequencies of updates and the level of detail to be collected.

Keep the plan up to date by making changes to basic task information: start, finish, and so on. After collecting actual progress information, enter that in Project fields such as % Complete, Actual and Remaining Duration, and Actual Work. Viewing the Tracking Gantt to review task progress and slippage is your best project management tool.
