Hour 20. Tracking Work on the Project > Understanding the Tracking Fields

Understanding the Tracking Fields

The date, duration, work, and cost fields you have been working with in Microsoft Project are fields in the current schedule. These are the fields you use to plan and calculate a schedule. They tell you what your latest and best thinking is and how to complete the project.

Table 20.1 lists the current schedule fields that have tracking counterparts: baseline, variance, and actual fields. There are baseline and actual fields for both tasks and resource assignments. Therefore, the baseline schedule shows not only when a task was scheduled to start and how much work was supposed to be done, but can also show when each resource assignment for the task was scheduled to start and how much work each resource was scheduled to perform.
