Q&A

Q1:I just changed a resource assignment and it has thrown everything off. How do I fix it?
A1: You can probably undo the change and try again after adjusting the task settings to localize the change you've just made. Before making the resource change the second time, try changing the task to Fixed Duration and turning off the Effort Driven setting. This should isolate the change and keep Project from updating the task duration.
Q2:When I originally estimated the duration for one of my tasks and assigned resources to it, I forgot to add one of the resources I planned to use. When I added the resource to the task, Project shifted the workload among the other resources and changed the task duration. How can I add the resource without this happening?
A2: As in the preceding question, turn off the Effort Driven setting for the task, add the resource, and then turn Effort Driven back on.
Q3:I just want to attach a resource to a task for reporting purposes, so Project will show the resource name with the task on reports. I tried assigning the resource to tasks with zero units, but Project turned my tasks into milestones. What can I do?
A3: If you make a task a Fixed Duration task first, you can assign a resource at zero percent units and Project will not turn it into a milestone.
Q4:Can I assign resources to summary tasks?
A4: Yes you can. Usually this is done simply to associate someone with management oversight with the group of tasks. However, Project calculates work for the assignment and the work amount will be virtually meaningless. I suggest you assign resources to summary tasks using zero percent in the Units field. This will allow Project to show the resource name in reports but will avoid calculating work and costs for the resource.
