Applying the Work Formula in a Material Resource Assignment

Project treats material resources somewhat differently from the way it treats work resources. The following list shows some of these differences:

  • There is no calendar of working and nonworking times for material resources; so, assigning material resources to a task will not alter the schedule due to nonworking time for the resource.

  • When you assign material resource units to a task you are defining physical units that will be consumed during work on the task. The Work field for a work resource defines the amount of time that the resource will spend on the task. The Work field for a material resource defines the number of physical units that will be consumed.

  • Material resource units are entered in decimal format, not percentage format.

  • Project will append the material resource label that you defined in the Resource Information dialog box to the values in the Units and Work fields.

  • The work formula, wherein Project multiples task duration by the assigned units to calculate work, is optional for material resources. You can define a fixed amount of the resource that will be consumed by the task, or you can define a variable amount that will be calculated by Project by multiplying the value of the Units field by the value of the Duration field to calculate the entry for the Work field.

  • If there are both work and material resources assigned to a task, the task duration will be determined solely by the work resource assignments.

  • Project may allow material resource units to be assigned to the task for dates after the work resources are finished. The duration of the task will reflect the work time period when the work resources are assigned. The finish date for the task will be the date when both types of resources are finished.
