Using Project 2000's Tutorials and Help Features

The first thing to do with any new software is to get used to the user interface—the screens, menus, and toolbars that you use to run the program. Microsoft Project offers an impressive array of learning aids, starting with the opening window. When you start Microsoft Project, the Welcome! window offers immediate access to tutorials and guides for using Project to develop and manage a project plan.

The Welcome! window (see Figure 1.1) appears each time you start Project (unless you clear the check box labeled Display Help at Startup). This is also the main Help window you will see when you choose Help, Contents and Index from the menu. It displays a number of built-in help features you can use to become more proficient with Microsoft Project. Even if you are an experienced Project user, the items in the Help window will be useful as you learn this version of Project. Use the Close button in the upper-right corner of the Welcome! window if, for the time being, you just want to close it without selecting any of the learning aids.
