Exercises

Your creative side has been suppressed long enough. It's time to add some color to your project plan. Begin by opening the file "New Product Hour 9.MPP." The (colorful!) results of the exercises can be found in the file "New Product Hour 9-Exercise.MPP." See the Introduction for instructions to access the sample files and solutions for these exercises on the book's Web page.

  1. Make a copy of the Gantt Chart so you can experiment with formatting.

  2. Add some emphasis up and down the chart. Display dashed lines, in teal, between every bar on the chart (the Gantt Rows gridlines). Change the tick lines on the Timescale (Title Vertical gridlines) to yellow. And display vertical lines down the chart at the beginning of every week (Major Columns gridlines) in red.

  3. On the Calendar view, change critical task bars to be shown in red. Also shade the nonworking days on the base calendar in olive.

  4. Now make changes to the Network Diagram. Hide all box fields except the task ID numbers and display the link relationship types on the link lines.

  5. Maybe straight lines on the diagram would be easier for people to follow. Straighten the linking lines on the diagram now.

  6. Well, that is actually less clear. Reset the lines to be angled. But make the link lines for noncritical tasks aqua so they will stand out.

  7. Finally, to give the diagram a time-phased appearance, arrange the boxes top down by week.
