Q&A

Q1:I've moved the divider between the task list table and the timescale bars in the Gantt Chart view so that only the task ID column is visible. When I print the view, however, the ID and Indicator columns continue to be printed. What can I do?
A1: To print only the ID, you need to modify the settings for the table displayed on the left side of the Gantt Chart view. Choose View, Table, More Tables; the More Tables dialog box appears with the name of the active table highlighted. Click the Edit button to display the Table Definition dialog box. At the bottom of the dialog box, you need to uncheck the Lock First Column check box. Then click OK to accept the change. In the More Tables dialog box, click Apply. Now when you preview or print the view, only the first column, ID, will print.
Q2:Microsoft Project is ignoring the manual page breaks I have set. How can I fix this?
A2: Choose File, Print to check the Print dialog box. Make sure the Manual Page Breaks box is checked.
Q3:Onscreen, there is some space between the vertical divider bar and my Gantt Chart bars. But when I print the view, the first task bar prints right up against the task list information. How can I keep some space before the bars when I print the Gantt Chart?
A3: The only solution to this is to use the Dates settings in the Print dialog box. Enter a starting print date that is actually a little earlier than the project start date. For example, if your project starts on August 1, 2001, and your timescale is set to print in weeks, start the printout at July 15 or so. You'll get the extra space before the bars on the printed copy.
Q4:Can I change the legend contents so that only a few key view elements are described?
A4: The short answer is no. All the formatting settings defined in the Bar Styles dialog boxes of the various views will be included in the Legend for that view. That can't be changed. Advanced users may want to experiment with removing certain task type definitions from the Gantt Chart Bar Styles dialog box, for example, but I don't recommend it. The best options are to turn off the Legend (in the Page Setup dialog box) so that it does not print or to print it on a separate page so that it does not take up valuable print space.
