Hour 14. Editing Resource Assignments > Contouring Resource Assignments

Contouring Resource Assignments

When Project creates an assignment schedule, it takes the value in the assignment Units field and uses that same value with the resource calendar to schedule work each day until the task is completed. As long as the resource calendar has the same number of available hours each time period, this produces a level or flat amount of work for each period. This is called a flat assignment profile, with the assigned units neither rising nor falling over time. In reality, many tasks require varying amounts of work throughout their duration. For some assignments, most of the work comes up front and then tapers off (sometimes called a front loaded profile). To create this schedule you would need to schedule more units each day during the early part of the schedule and then smaller units later in the schedule. Other assignments start out with light work loads that build as the task nears completion (called a back loaded profile). Here you need to schedule small units early on and then larger units later in the assignment.

If the actual work profile needs to vary from period to period, with peaks and valleys of activity, or a rising (or falling) trend of activity, you can use one of Project's predefined assignment profiles, called contours, to schedule different numbers of units at different times during the assignment. You can also create your own contour by manipulating the scheduled work for each period.
