Hour 14. Editing Resource Assignments > Introducing Delay in an Assignment

Introducing Delay in an Assignment

Now, let's get back to fine-tuning the scheduled work for an assignment. You may remember from Hour 11, "Defining Resources and Costs," that when a project is scheduled from a fixed start date, Microsoft Project automatically schedules all assignments to begin as soon as the task begins. However, you can delay the start of one or more assignments so that they start later than the other assignments for that task.

Conversely, if the project is scheduled from a fixed finish date, Project automatically schedules all assignments to finish just as the task finishes. You can override the default assignments by allowing one or more assignments to finish before the task and the other assignments finish. Although this change causes the assigned work to finish earlier, and therefore also start earlier, it is recorded as a negative delay by Project's scheduling engine.
