Part II: Developing a Timeline > Linking Tasks in the Correct Sequence

Hour 6. Linking Tasks in the Correct Sequence

In Hours 4, "Starting the Scheduling Process" and 5, "Defining When Project Can Schedule Tasks," you began learning the instructions you can give Project to impose terms and conditions on how it calculates the schedule for you. You saw how to define the times when tasks can be scheduled and how to enter estimates of task duration for both regular working hours and for continuous or elapsed time. You also saw how to create and modify an essential scheduling element—base calendars, for the entire project and for exceptional tasks.

Although the calendar and duration estimates are essential, you didn't see much change in the schedule in the last two hours. In this hour, you will see dramatic changes. You will look at specifying the order in which tasks should be scheduled, which is called linking tasks.

In this hour, you will learn:

  • How linking tasks changes your plan

  • The four types of task linking relationships

  • How to create task links

  • How to delete or modify task links

  • How to schedule overlapping tasks
