Creating Custom Fields

In addition to all of the Project fields you have been using—Start, Finish, Duration, and so on—there are many empty fields in Project with generic names, available for use for your own purposes. Customizing a field in Project can be as simple as renaming a field to something more descriptive, or as sophisticated as entering a list of values for a field to restrict data entry. You can also create a formula in a custom field to calculate values based on other Project fields.

Perhaps you need to track a work order number with tasks. A renamed custom Text field would work well. Maybe you are using Project as an estimating tool and would like to add a markup percentage to the cost figures. A custom Cost field that uses a formula you define would calculate the markup for you.
