Hour 13. Assigning Resources and Costs t... > Choosing the Task Settings for Assig...

Choosing the Task Settings for Assignments

As pointed out in the previous hour, the first thing you should do when planning to assign a resource to a task is check the task's Task Type setting. This setting governs whether Project recalculates the task duration after you assign a resource. Specifically, for Fixed Units and Fixed Work tasks the initial assignment may cause Project to recalculate the task duration. However, if the task type is Fixed Duration, Project can't change Duration and it recalculates the Units instead.

To Do: Verifying or Changing the Task Type Setting

To verify or change the Task Type, follow these steps:

1.
Select the task. If the Task Form is displayed in the bottom pane you can view the Task Type field there. If not, use the next two steps to display the Task Information dialog box where you can also view the field.

2.
Click the Task Information tool to display the Task Information dialog box.

3.
Select the Advanced tab.

4.
Check the Task Type setting and change it, if necessary, by clicking the list arrow and selecting Fixed Duration, Fixed Units, or Fixed Work (see Figure 13.1).

5.
Click OK.
