Hour 21. Analyzing Progress and Revising... > Revising the Schedule to Finish on T...

Revising the Schedule to Finish on Time and on Budget

Your initial project plan is your best guess at the time, and it might be optimistic. Without a bit of luck, or a lot of experience with similar projects, your initial plan probably won't meet certain criteria. Even the best plans, however, rarely progress exactly as initially defined. Hopefully, good project management procedures were in place from the beginning, and the project has a clearly defined goal, realistic assumptions, and well-defined scope. The process of revising a schedule is considerably easier, and more accurate, if basic characteristics were defined early in the process. Even if they weren't, however, Project is a powerful tool for experimenting with "what if" scenarios while revising the plan.

Note

The strategies discussed in Hour 16, "Fine-Tuning the Project Plan," are also effective after the project is underway. The same types of adjustments might be appropriate for revising a project in progress.
