Chapter 8. Text Behavior and Style Theor... > Entering Text in a SmartShape Symbol

Entering Text in a SmartShape Symbol

Begin a new diagram in Visio based on a blank document. Select the Text tool from the toolbar (the tool that looks like the capital letter A). You will notice your cursor changes to a plus sign (+) with a small page attached. This is your visual cue you are using the Text tool. Now click, hold, and drag out an area in which to enter text. Next, enter the phrase “Visio SmartShape symbols” and then click off of the text area. Switch back to the pointer tool.

What have you accomplished? Does it appear that you have placed a string of text on the page itself? If you assumed that this was the case, you might wish to reconsider. Using the pointer tool, select the text. Next select Format, Line. In the dialog box, select pattern one in the Pattern list and click OK to exit. Next select Format, Fill from the menus. In the dialog box, in the Pattern list, select pattern one and click OK to exit. If you are using Visio 5.0, you should see a white rectangle with a black line at its perimeter. If you are using Visio 2000, you will still see the text alone. Open the ShapeSheet for the text symbol. Notice the Fill Format section and the Line Format section. The changes you have made to the SmartShape symbol's formatting appear here.
