Chapter 7. Specialized Visio SmartShape ... > Classes of 1D SmartShapes Symbols

Classes of 1D SmartShapes Symbols

In terms of Visio's view of 1D symbols, there are essentially two classes of 1D SmartShape symbols: height-based and right-side-up. As we progress, we are going to build one of each of these classes of 1D SmartShape symbols as well as discuss their performance and how they are both used and interacted with.

Let's take the height-based 1D SmartShape symbols first. A height-based 1D SmartShape symbol is referred to as such not only because the user interacts with the endpoints as they would with any other 1D symbol, but also because the sizing of the symbol is totally controlled by the height of the symbol rather than the width. This eliminated the rather strange “stretching” that would otherwise occur when the endpoints are located either nearer to or farther apart from each other. Examples of this class of 1D symbology are electronic components such as diodes or resistors on wires, valve symbols, and any schematic symbol used as part of a connected diagram.
